F2: Effectively Engaging Families Impacted by Substance Use

Presented by Kristi Glotzbach, MSW, LCSW
Located at

Workshop Description

Families affected by substance use disorders and involved with child welfare services often face a multitude of challenges and barriers to wellbeing. Parents with substance use disorder have a lower likelihood of successful reunification with children and their children tend to stay in the foster care system longer than children of parents without substance use disorders. Providing services that are collaborative and family-centered, as well as culturally and trauma responsive can assist in effectively engaging these families.  This session explores understanding how to best serve these families and the importance of understanding how stigma and language may affect engagement. Participants will also learn how gender responsive services can be integral in serving those diagnosed with substance use disorder and other cooccurring disorders.

Learning objectives:

  • Better understand current science on the relationship between addiction, trauma, and recovery
  • Learn about the different paths to making trauma responsive services available.
  • Discuss how to navigate our own perceptions and biases while assisting our clients through the stigma of seeking services when substance use disorder is a factor.

Approved for DCS Foster Care Parent Hours
