Workshop Description
Families affected by substance use and involved with child welfare often face many challenges. Parents with substance use disorder are less likely to reunite with them and their children tend to stay in foster care longer than children of parents without substance use disorders. Providing services that are family-centered and trauma responsive can assist in effectively engaging these families. This session explores understanding the connection between substance use and trauma, as well as how to engage families impacted. Participants will explore different treatment strategies
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will understand the connection between substance use/misuse and a history of trauma.
- Participants will be able to identify the ways in which substance use impacts brain functioning.
- Participants will understand the strategies to mitigate substance use as a coping mechanism for trauma experiences.
- Participants will explore family centered and evidenced based treatment for the whole family.
